Unnecessary Vocals

I composed this short piece for my Music Theory I class at LCCas my final project for the fall term of 2020. I set out with two simple goals: 1. I wanted to piano to be the central instrument in the piece since this is my first year studying piano 2. In addition to standard notation for all instruments, I wanted to use some effects and notate those The initial rhythmic concept was conceived in 5/8, but it made more sense to notate it according to how the phrase was accented, which resulted in a time signature change in almost every measure.

Music in our Conscious and Subconscious Minds

In the book Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks, there is a case study about a student called J., who was thought to have been cheating in class because she gave answers that were word-for-word quotes from her textbook. As it turned out, she didn’t cheat, J. has a specific type of photographic memory where she can remember anything as long as she puts it to music. She proved to her teacher that she didn’t cheat by singing entire portions of his lectures from memory.

Formal Analysis This is a photograph of a tangled tree in a jungle on the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico with twelve square mirrors woven into the tree’s branches by the photographer, Robert Smithson.This is the seventh in a series of nine photos called ‘mirror displacements’ taken in 1969.The series was accompanied by an essay called ‘Incidents of Mirror-Travel in the Yucatan’. A central bundle of grayish-brown trunks makes up the tree’s core which is surrounded by thin branches arcing downward and outward.
